I cannot believe the words I am typing – but we had snow in Florida! We literally had snow at the beach! I am typing this from my desk with the windows open, watching the sunrise over the Choctawhatchee Bay right now all the while thinking just a few weeks ago I saw inches of snow covering this same scene.
I honestly believe you have not lived until you see a palm tree covered in snow. I will never forget the dropped jaws on everyone’s faces as we walked up and down our street. So many of our older neighbors told us they had never seen anything like this before and we probably wouldn’t again in our lifetime. To that our oldest responded, “Stop saying that!! All we have to do is ask God and He can do it.” That innocent childlike faith is what pleases the heart of God most. I could take a few lessons from her.
I will also never forget how many Floridian kids (including one of ours) didn’t know what to do with the snow. As our youngest kept repeating, “Cold outside!” She was officially not a fan as many kids on our street weren’t.
My favorite moment came one morning at sunrise. I grabbed my camera and our oldest, ran across the street to watch the sun rise over the Bay. The shoreline and docks were covered in snow. It was the orange hue of the sun reflecting off of the white ground covering that sealed the moment in my mind forever. The tide was out. This allowed our daughter and I to walk far out into the Bay, more than usual, on the grass flats. We took pictures. We marveled together.
I do not know if we will ever see snow in Florida again. I will never forget this time, though.
