“There are two things in Autumn that particularly appeal to me. Sometimes there is a mild melancholy in the falling leaves, in the muted light, in the haziness of things, in the elegance of the slender tree trunks.”
-Van Gogh
48 hours. Two plane tickets given to us. Any destination. And a babysitter.
This was our situation when we jumped on a plane after work on a normal Saturday. We flew to Kentucky to visit my sister – and came back Monday afternoon. It was a 48 hour trip with only 24 of those spent at our destination, but it was full of many hikes, meals and most needed relaxing moments.
There’s pressure to make something amazing out of a situation like this because it doesn’t come around often. Free plane tickets, a destination to anywhere, 48 hours – just the two of us. The opportunities of where to go were endless but we couldn’t pass up a chance to visit my sister in her home state.
We got to their house Saturday night around midnight after work that day, flying then driving. When we awoke Sunday morning, we threw on our clothes and went hiking. The air was cool and fresh. It was literally the most ideal morning. They said a cold front had come through that particular weekend. We did our first hike and had pizza at the bottom of the mountain. Seriously, some of the best I’ve ever had which is saying a lot because I don’t typically reach for pizza. After lunch we jumped in the car and headed for round two of hiking in another location. By the end of the day we were beat and sore.
Monday morning when we woke up, we visited the Kentucky Castle before heading to the airport.
It felt like we were there for much longer than we were. That goes to show how much goodness was packed into a few short hours. I loved the thought that we just went from FL to KY in a matter of hours, hiked a mountain, and came home. It felt adventurous.
These pictures were good for my soul. They weren’t staged. They didn’t have to meet a set of requirements and constraints that I typically put on myself. They were strictly to remind me of how lush the rolling hills were, how crisp breeze in the air was and how good of a time we had visiting my sister all in 48 hours.
